What a smart opener actually does
A smart opener connects to your home WiFi and links to a smartphone app. The practical features Columbus homeowners use most:
- Status alerts: Know when the door opens or closes. Get an alert if it has been open more than a set time.
- Remote open/close: Open or close from anywhere. Useful for letting in contractors, family members, or deliveries.
- Auto-close: Door automatically closes after a set number of minutes if left open. Eliminates the anxiety of forgetting to close the garage.
- Delivery access: Amazon Key and similar services allow in-garage delivery when you are not home. Requires compatible LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener.
- Activity history: Full log of every open and close event.

The myQ Smart Garage Control ($30–$50 at hardware stores) adds app monitoring to most existing openers made after 1993. Cheapest path to smart features if you are not ready to replace the opener. We install and configure it on a standard service call.

Do I need a hub for myQ?
No. Current LiftMaster and Chamberlain smart openers have WiFi built in. Older myQ systems required a hub but those have been phased out.
What if my WiFi does not reach the garage?
A WiFi extender in or near the garage typically resolves this. The opener needs a consistent 2.4GHz signal. We check connectivity at installation.
How much does smart opener installation cost?
New smart belt-drive opener installed in Columbus: $350–$500. Add-on myQ module for existing opener: $30–$50 plus a standard service call.
Is battery backup worth it in Columbus?
