What a smart opener actually does

A smart opener connects to your home WiFi and links to a smartphone app. The practical features Columbus homeowners use most:

  • Status alerts: Know when the door opens or closes. Get an alert if it has been open more than a set time.
  • Remote open/close: Open or close from anywhere. Useful for letting in contractors, family members, or deliveries.
  • Auto-close: Door automatically closes after a set number of minutes if left open. Eliminates the anxiety of forgetting to close the garage.
  • Delivery access: Amazon Key and similar services allow in-garage delivery when you are not home. Requires compatible LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener.
  • Activity history: Full log of every open and close event.

Smart opener options for Columbus homes

LiftMaster 87504-267 (Belt Drive, WiFi, Battery Backup)

Our most commonly installed smart opener. Belt drive for quiet operation. Built-in WiFi with myQ app, no separate hub needed. Battery backup for operation during power outages — relevant in Columbus ice storm season. Installed price: $420–$480.

LiftMaster 84505R (Chain Drive, WiFi)

Budget-friendly smart option. Chain drive is louder but more cost-effective for detached garages. WiFi and myQ app included. Installed price: $320–$380.

Chamberlain B2405C (Belt Drive, WiFi, Camera)

Built-in camera lets you see the garage interior from the app. Belt drive, quiet operation. Installed price: $430–$500.

Add-on myQ module for existing openers

The myQ Smart Garage Control ($30–$50 at hardware stores) adds app monitoring to most existing openers made after 1993. Cheapest path to smart features if you are not ready to replace the opener. We install and configure it on a standard service call.

"The most common question we get about smart openers is whether the auto-close feature is reliable. It is. The setting that matters most is the timer length. Most Columbus homeowners land on 10 minutes: long enough not to close while you are unloading groceries, short enough to catch a forgotten door. The app notification that says your garage door has been open for 10 minutes has probably prevented hundreds of Columbus homeowners from a January night with an open garage."

Smart opener questions

Do I need a hub for myQ?

No. Current LiftMaster and Chamberlain smart openers have WiFi built in. Older myQ systems required a hub but those have been phased out.

What if my WiFi does not reach the garage?

A WiFi extender in or near the garage typically resolves this. The opener needs a consistent 2.4GHz signal. We check connectivity at installation.

How much does smart opener installation cost?

New smart belt-drive opener installed in Columbus: $350–$500. Add-on myQ module for existing opener: $30–$50 plus a standard service call.

Is battery backup worth it in Columbus?

Yes. Columbus gets ice storms and outages several times a year. Battery backup means your door works during power outages, which matters if the garage is your primary entry point.
