What matters in an Ohio garage door

Columbus weather puts doors through real temperature swings. What we look for: insulation that works at Ohio temperatures, steel gauge that resists hail and branch impacts, weathersealing that does not crack in the cold, and a finish that holds up in Ohio summers.

Garage door brand comparison - Columbus Ohio homes

Brand breakdown

Clopay — Our top recommendation for most Columbus homes

Largest residential garage door manufacturer in North America. Widest parts availability, consistent build quality across price points, and good insulation options for Ohio winters. The Gallery Series is the mid-range workhorse — solid steel gauge, R-12 to R-18 depending on configuration, wide color range. The Coachman Series is their premium carriage-house line, popular in Dublin and Upper Arlington. Parts are readily available across Columbus, which matters for long-term serviceability.

Amarr — Strong second choice, good value

Competes directly with Clopay across price points with no complaints about build quality. Heritage and Classica collections offer good insulation specs and competitive price-per-R-value. Parts availability is somewhat less than Clopay in the Columbus market. Good choice for budget-conscious buyers who want a quality insulated door.

Wayne Dalton — Solid mid-range, unique spring system

Uses the proprietary TorqueMaster spring system with the spring enclosed in a tube rather than exposed on a horizontal shaft. Safer from a DIY injury standpoint but requires specific tools for service. Build quality is good; insulation is reasonable. We service these regularly across Columbus.

Overhead Door — Commercial pedigree in residential application

The oldest name in the industry. Excellent commercial products. Residential line is solid but tends to run at a premium compared to Clopay and Amarr for equivalent specs. Good choice if you are maintaining brand continuity with an existing Overhead Door installation.

What to avoid

Box-store doors sold under house brands are frequently builder-grade regardless of what is on the box. Thin steel, no meaningful insulation, minimal weatherstripping. Fine for a detached garage in mild use. Not what we would put on a Columbus attached garage with living space above it.

"We get asked about brands on most installation calls. Honest answer is usually Clopay for most situations, Amarr if budget is a constraint. Brand matters less than insulation level and steel gauge, which are direct spec numbers. A R-18 Amarr and a R-18 Clopay will perform similarly in January. The specs matter more than the nameplate."

What to look for regardless of brand

  • Steel gauge — 24-gauge minimum for dent resistance
  • Insulation R-value — R-13 minimum for attached Columbus garages; R-16 to R-18 for rooms above or adjacent
  • Layers — triple-layer is more rigid and better insulated than double-layer
  • Weather sealing — flexible vinyl that will not crack in cold weather
  • Finish warranty — varies significantly by brand and line

Brand questions

Do you install all major brands?

We install Clopay and Amarr as our primary brands for new installations. We service all brands including Wayne Dalton, Overhead Door, and others.

What R-value for Columbus winters?

R-13 is the practical minimum for an attached garage. R-16 to R-18 is better if there is living space above or adjacent.

Is a wood door worth it in Ohio?

Real wood doors require regular painting and sealing to handle Ohio humidity and freeze-thaw cycles. Wood-look composite gives the aesthetic without the maintenance. Generally the better choice in Columbus.

How much more do premium brands cost?

The price gap between a mid-range Amarr and a premium Clopay Coachman is typically $400–$800 on a double-car installation. Whether that premium is worth it depends on your home and neighborhood.
