When panel replacement makes sense
A vehicle backup into a garage door is one of the most common causes of panel damage we see in Columbus — and it does not have to mean a full door replacement. If the damage is limited to one or two panels and the rest of the door is in good condition, panel replacement is typically the more cost-effective repair.
The catch: replacement panels must match the existing door in style, color, and manufacturer. Older doors or discontinued lines may not have matching panels available, in which case full replacement becomes necessary. We check panel availability before quoting — if we cannot source a match, we tell you upfront.
Panel replacement vs. full door replacement
General rule: if repair cost exceeds 50–60% of full door replacement cost, replacement is usually the better investment. Replacing panels on an old door with other aging hardware leaves you with a door that is likely to have other problems soon. But for a door that is otherwise in good condition, panel replacement is the smart call when damage is limited.
When panel replacement works well
- Damage limited to one or two panels
- Door is less than 10–12 years old
- Panel style and color can be sourced from the manufacturer
- Rest of the door hardware is in good condition
When full replacement makes more sense
- Three or more panels damaged
- Door is 15+ years old with aging hardware
- Matching panels are no longer available
- Damage cost approaches 50%+ of full door replacement
"We get panel replacement calls where the homeowner has already been told they need a full new door. Sometimes that is true. But we have sourced matching panels for doors that were supposedly discontinued and done the repair for $200 instead of $1,200. We check availability before recommending full replacement."
Panel replacement questions
How much does panel replacement cost?
Single panel replacement in Columbus typically runs $150–$400 depending on panel size, style, and availability. Two-panel replacement is $280–$700. Written quote before work starts.
How long does it take?
Once the replacement panel is sourced, installation takes 1–2 hours for a standard residential panel.
Can you match my existing door color?
If the panel is still available from the manufacturer, yes — factory color match. For discontinued doors, color match may not be exact. We will show you available options before ordering.
What if my door model is discontinued?
We exhaust manufacturer sourcing first. If matching panels are not available, we will give you an honest assessment of whether a non-exact match is acceptable or whether full replacement makes more sense.
